St Francis De Sales School, Nagpur

After passing out from the primary school at St Joseph's Convent Kamptee, we were booted out by the nuns and now had to travel to Nagpur. We had an Army School bus, a modified Shaktiman truck to transport us to and from the school.

The Majestic St Francis De Sales Church which was part of our school. In fact the school was part of the Parish I think.

Sunday Mass was a dread then,  as we were hungry and breakfast was only served after mass, which was way beyond our daily breakfast timings. In those days, you were not allowed to receive Holy Communion if you ate anything 1 hour prior to that.

Modified by Carol.
You could not eat three hours pror to receiving Holy Communion.

Another view of the church.

The interior of the church. It was late evening and dark when they opened up the church so was surprised to get a very clear photo. Had to combine multiple exposures though.

It says it all. Where I live anything above 50 years is considered historical.

I studied here till 1971. As I was also in the hostel, I have strong memories of this place, not all of them good, the least of which was the food. My Principal was Fr. Matthew Fernandes. Almost nothing  has changed here after 43 years. Maybe 100 too. There is no hostel now though.

The main entrance to the School

 The courtyard cum basketball court.

The football field with spectator steps on the side. I remember sitting on these steps during lunch when we heard that Neil Armstrong had taken his first step on the moon. That was July 20th 1969. That's one small step for man....................I'm sure it was written for him.

My Classroom on the 1st Floor and Nazi style showers in the basement. (for the hostelers)  The Church can be seen in the background.

The corridor with the fee office in the foreground. It was one of the most expensive schools in Nagpur. Rupees 14 or about USD 25 cents per month. So there had to be a separate secure fee collection office.

The bulbous tree base in the courtyard still alive.

This store in front of our school was also still operating. I used to buy a sweet called Frutti which had a picture of an animal or bird and you had to collect all and stick in an album and collect a prize. It was all the craze then.

Not sure if the name then was New Azad or just Azad Stores.

A last view of the Bell Towers from my hotel windows
